Project 2

Project 2

NEXT STEPS

I plan to complete my Project 2 completely over thanksgiving break. I plan on at least working out what I need to do and maybe make an outline and a rough plan on what I need to do before thanksgiving day. After that I will hopefully finish the writing portion in the following days after thanksgiving. Then I plan on practicing my presentation and how I can share my ideas to the class. I already have my artifacts for the time capsule so all I have to do is explain their meaning and actually do the writing portion. I am really excited to present this because I have some great ideas. Overall I am going to be focusing on finishing this project up before I come back to school after break. I just have to not do what I usually do and not procrastinate for once in my life. I am confident I might just become so bored I can just bang it out in a couple hours on one day over break. I am actually really excited and confident to work on this project. I think I have had a pretty crazy and interesting first semester so I am ready to share how it has gone. The first thing I will do is make a more detailed outline and then I will obviously fill in the outline and make it all neat and ready to submit. That is really all I have left to do as I have most of the information.

Time Capsule

Artifact 1(Yo-yo)

When I first came to school one of the things I would do is bring a yo-yo around campus. I did this mostly during the first few days of orientation, and then the following few weeks. It really helped me get into my groove in a way and helped me settle into the school life and atmosphere. Also, it was a great conversation starter and I could even do a few tricks. The yo-yo became a running joke among my new friends that I took it everywhere I went. That was until It broke and it no longer came back up after I threw it down. I was pretty sad, but I also got over it pretty quickly as it is just a yo-yo. This artifact definitely plays a huge role in my college story and I really could not do this project without mentioning the yo-yo that I used constantly the first few weeks of school. This honestly meant a lot to me because I used it occasionally during high school especially during school and football so it was nice to sort of bring that piece of high school and my old traditions. This item definitely was one of the first things to come to mind when I read the rubric and saw artifacts on it.

Artifact 2 (Sword)

My roommate came back to the room one day after leaving campus and going to spirit halloween and he came back with a fake sword meant for a halloween costume. I thought it was really cool at first because who doesn’t like swords, but I had no idea of the significance and the symbol it would create. The plastic fake sword is an artifact and a representation of the bond that me and my roommates have. We knew each other from highschool and all decided to come to UNE together and room together. I was a little nervous at first because I would consider myself friends with these people before I came here but I would not consider us to have been very close before coming to school. As the semester progressed, we started watching some TV shows together and a lot of those TV shows included swords and fighting. We would always take out the fake sword and hit each other around with it and just mess around in general with the sword. I never would have thought that we would use that sword to hang out and create a much closer bond than what we came into school with. Now, some of our best times together is when we can just sit down and watch various TV shows together and just have a good time. Some of the shows we watched and are watching include Attack on Titan, Game of Thrones And Vinland Saga. It is nice to just sit down, relax and mess around with my friends, which is why the sword holds meaning to me. I felt like I needed to include it into my time capsule to effectively explain my college story.

Artifact 3 (Basketball)

One of the one things I became interested in and passionate about when I came here was basketball. I joined a 3v3 intramural basketball team with my roommates and that was some of my favorite times here so far at UNE. We are all huge watchers of basketball so it was really fun to make a hobby out of it. It led me to becoming more active and gave me motivation to hit the gym more to shoot around, play pick-up, and lift in the campus center. I am a huge Boston Celtics fan so watching them sort of hyped me up for the intramural games. We first played a regular season where we went 1-3 but we played all of the best teams in the league. That record was good enough to get us into the playoffs where we won 2 games, including a game against a 4-0 team that we lost to in the regular season. They were way bigger than us so it was awesome to actually beat them. We did end up losing in the semi-finals 2-1 but we were very close and put on a great effort, especially considering we are freshman. Overall basketball has become a great hobby and one of my favorite things to do here at UNE. My time capsule would not be complete if I did not add something like this basketball to signify one of my main hobbies and activities to do here on campus.

Artifact 4 (Squirtle)

Before I even came to school, obviously I went shopping for supplies and different things I would need. I ended up going to Target and coming across a stuffed Pokemon and begged my parents to get it for me. They ended up caving in and buying me the Squirtle and I took it to college with me and now I sleep with it every night. He stays in my bed pretty much all day but I don’t know if I could sleep without him. He honestly really helped me settle in and get used to college. This being my first time away from home it was pretty difficult and stressful to try and get used to everything about college life. It was really hard to get comfortable in my much smaller bed than the one I have at home and just having him there somehow makes it easier to fall asleep every night. Without this artifact in my time capsule, it would not really be an accurate portrayal of my college story.

Artifact 5 (Nerf Gun)

The final artifact that I will be putting in my time capsule is my nerf gun. I bought it a little into the semester for a halloween costume. I have always kept it close by since I bought it. I have shot countless people including my roommates and other people on my floor and in my building. However, according to my RA, “fake weapons are not allowed” so I have to be careful every time I bring it out of my room and make sure she is not outside roaming the halls. It has great meaning to me and signifies me making new friends and building a bond with new people. I have never been a people person and I am not really outgoing, but just something stupid to have can give me reason to go spend time with other people. I have definitely appreciated all of the new friends I have made here and I wouldn’t be able to tell my college story without talking about all of the new people I have met and become close with.

Conclusion

In my time capsule, these 4 artifacts are what I would put inside of it to tell my college story. All of them affected my college experience in unique ways, but all have helped me get through a pretty stressful first semester. It is always difficult coming into a new environment and immediately knowing what to do or how to do it. These artifacts have helped me socially and mentally adapt to the crazy environment that is a first semester in college. I hope in 100 years, the people from the future can appreciate and really get a sense for what a first semester was like at UNE in 2022.
